DESIGN REALIZATION MODULE

Dear All,

RE: BENV GA08 Design Realisation Module, MArch Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 2)

This is an introductory note relating to the upcoming Year 4 Design Realisation (DR) module.  As you can see from our poster, we are delighted to be able to work with so many amazing studios and offices to make the Design Realisation programme a genuinely collaborative one.  As reported to you in Term 1, the organization, structure and feedback systems for this module are all broadly the same as last year.  Punctuating the term are events to help progress the DR report, including a Lecture Programme, Interim Reviews, DR Seminars and Cross-Unit Crits.  The submission of the full DR report is due on the first day of Term 3.  Please do look at the programme specification in the Bartlett Course Guide for full details of the module.  Please also see the attached timetable, which outlines all events including Practice Tutor and Consultants input across the coming term.

There are only minor changes of emphasis for the coming year, as follows:

+ Aim for a clearer synthesis of technology, construction and design on all DR projects, with an emphasis on physical making and testing of proposals. Focus on potential to enrich the ‘design’ project through material testing and integrated innovative research.

+ We want to generally lessen the overlap between DR and Design Portfolio work.

+ We are interested in more material innovations, prototypes, tests, contraptions, components, structures, details etc.  We would like the DR to become the site where the testing of ‘paper’ assumptions is encouraged and becomes possible.

+ We will provide clearer benchmarks, tasks, feedback and deadlines for students to help with their time management.

+ Again this year, we will award the Design Technology Prize to the student who shows most promise in the DR arena.  This prize is funded to allow further development of an aspect of the prize-winning work, which is then disseminated through the Design Technology Prize Exhibition at the Bartlett in Sept/Oct 2013.
