Maps, geospatial data and Grasshopper

Hi all, I will be posting (more or less frequently) some Grasshopper utilities to try to complement what we did in the workshop. This post extends some infomation to other you have posted on CAD files for cities and explains what I showed to some of you during the workshop. I hope you would find it useful.

Open Street Map (openstreetmap.org/) is a free and colaborative platform of online maps (like a “wikipedia” of maps). With Grasshopper we can access and draw its database. Below you can see a map of the markets, recycling facilities and ferry routes of Hong Kong as an example.

This is possible because we can download the Open Street Map (OSM) information from its website. This data is stored with a tag for each location point with certain “Key values”, which are something like the program of each point, like buildings, amenities, schools, bicycle roads, markets … You can find the specifications of those key values in: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features

With Grasshopper and Elk, the plugin that reads this files (http://www.food4rhino.com/project/elk?etx) we can access, draw and analyse this information. You would only have to downlad and install Elk into your computer and register in the OSM platform and export the zoom in the map you are interested in.

NOTE: REMEMBER THAT IF YOU WANT TO TAKE THE DRAWING TO RHINO, YOU JUST HAVE TO USE THE “BAKE” UTILITY, WICH YOU CAN FIND USING RIGHT CLIK ON EACH COMPONENT OR PRESSING SPACE BAR ONCE THE COMPONENTS ARE SELECTED.
